Birth anniversary celebrations witness enthusiastic participation

Governor Biswa Bhusan Harichandan on Wednesday asked students and youth to follow the principles of Mahatma Gandhi and help the needy.

He along with Endowments Minister Vellampalli Srinivas, Chief Secretary L.V. Subramanyam, MLA Malladi Vishnu and Collector A.Md. Imtiaz, participated in the 150th Gandhi birth anniversary celebrations at Bapu Museum and at P.B. Siddhartha College of Arts and Science.

Mr. Harichandan said the Father of the Nation became a role model by following the principles of ‘ahimsa’, ‘shanti’ and ‘satyam.’

Students of various schools and colleges participated in Gandhi celebrations, which also coincided with the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Sastry, at Siddhartha College auditorium, organised jointly by the School Education Department and Gandhi Smarak Nidhi.

Mr. Harichandan began the proceedings by garlanding the bust of Mahatma Gandhi. Later, he felicitated freedom fighters P.C. Rajan, Pavuluri Sivarama Krishnaiah, Ravuri Arjun Rao and Manorama, and distributed prizes to students who stood top in essay writing, elocution, quiz and drawing competitions.

Principal Secretary, School Education, B. Rajashekar and Commissioner K. Sandhya Rani were among those who participated.

Cultural shows depicting the freedom movement impressed the audience at the Bapu Museum and at the auditorium.

Swachhata train

South Central Railway Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) P. Srinivas flagged off Bilaspur-Tirupati Express train No.17481, decorated with Swachhata themes at the Vijayawada station and participated in the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ campaign on the premises.

He called upon people to say ‘no’ to single-use plastic and protect the environment. As part of ‘Swachh Rail – Swachh Bharat – Swachhata Pakhwara, SCR had taken up cleanliness drives and organised campaigns, rallies and street plays on greenery from September 16 to October 2, the DRM said.

Additional DRMs M.V.S. Ramaraju and G. Sumana, heads of different branches, Scouts and Guides and others participated in ‘shramdan’ on the railway station premises.

At Nuzvid IIIT

Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologities (RGUKT), Nuzvid IIIT Director D. Suryachandra Rao said that Gandhian way is the only system to develop the nation.

Students of the institute participated in Swachh Bharat and cleaned the campus. NSS coordinator O. Srihari, faculty and other staff participated in the drive.
