The most endearing qualities of Mahatma Gandhi were his insistence to always tell the truth and his disciplined way of life. Students should take a leaf out of his life to lead a virtuous life, said K. Sandhya Rani, Commissioner, School Education, on Wednesday.

She was addressing students drawn from different schools at a prize-distribution function organised by the Andhra Pradesh Gandhi Smarak Nidhi, in collaboration with the School Education Department.

The Smarak Nidhi has been organising a series of activities such as competitions in essay-writing, drawing, singing, elocution and slogan-writing for schoolchildren as part of the 150th birth anniversary celebrations of the Mahatma. The students present were those who had qualified for State-level competitions after winning prizes at the mandal and district-level events.

Ms. Sandhya Rani also gave prizes to the first two district-level winners of all events.

Convenor of Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th Birth Anniversary Celebrations G. Rashmi said mandal-level competitions were organised in June, followed by district-level contests in July.

Gandhi Smarak Nidhi members Y. Ramachandra Rao, B. Sankar Rao and Raavi Sarada were among those present.
