Discom to upgrade capacity of sub-stations in seed capital

October 26, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:42 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

The A.P Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (AP-SPDCL) is taking steps to augment capacity of the sub-stations at Rayapudi and Mandadam in Guntur district significantly to facilitate construction of the capital city of Amaravati that is likely to begin in a few months.

Instructions have already been issued to increase the capacity of Rayapudi sub-station to 8 MVA and the one at Mandadam to 10 MVA, and to retain one of the transformers arranged for the Capital foundation ceremony, to meet the future requirements.

This is amidst indications that the government might hold the forthcoming Assembly sessions at Uddandarayunipalem.

Assembly session

The Energy Department alerted officials of SPDCL about the possibility of government choosing the same venue for holding the Assembly session.

For the record, the government has proposed to convene the Assembly meetings in pre-fabricated structures at Thullur but a decision has not yet been taken in view of the logistical issues involved in it.

But, since the grounds at Uddandarayunipalem have been levelled and other basic amenities already in place, the government may opt for it, as it will have to only take care of accommodation of the MLAs, which can be booked in Vijayawada and Guntur cities.

“The government may eventually prefer holding the session in Hyderabad, like it did last time after considering Visakhapatnam, due to the advantages that the common Capital city has. This is the information we have at the moment,” an SPDCL official said on the condition of anonymity.

Meanwhile, the southern DISCOM has incurred an expenditure of nearly Rs. 25 lakh on the infrastructure it created at Uddandarayunipalem. However, the amount of power consumed has not yet been calculated.

The large scale decorative lighting provided in Vijayawada and Guntur cities from October 20 to 25 entailed additional costs for the DISCOM. Material has been sourced from all major cities and towns in Andhra Pradesh and even Hyderabad for the ceremony.
