“A lot of people do not know that they can have a career in fashion designing. Fashion industry is one of the top five industries in the world and yet we are far from considering fashion a serious business,” says renowned fashion designer Zubin Vakil.

Addressing a seminar organised by the Samana Institute of Fashion Technology at Nalanda Degree College in the city on Wednesday, the Hyderabad-based celebrity designer said fashion awareness must happen on the streets of cities such as Vijayawada.

“People must look at fashion like any other professional course such as engineering, medicine or chartered accountancy. There is much more to fashion than models walking the ramp in designer clothes. Here I am talking about fashion engineering. Just like an engineer deals with various components, a fashion designer must also be well-versed with the various components of the fashion world. Mr. Vakil was speaking on fashion awareness and on the scope of employment in fashion industry.

Current trend

Referring to various components of fashion industry including textile designing, jewellery designing, vision merchandising, and fashion styling, he said it may take a while for fashion to make inroads in this city, but people here were enthusiastic about anything new and open to the idea of adopting what suited them.

Not happy with the current trend of girls focussing on their clothing and other stuff only during weddings or any other grand occasions, he said one must embrace fashion in day-to-day life and live with it.

The talk was followed by an interactive session where students tossed queries at him on the various facets of the fashion industry. Some were curious to know about the fee structure which, he said was ‘very reasonable'.

To a query on whether anybody could pursue a career in fashion designing, Mr. Vakil presented himself as the finest example informing the students that he hailed from a middle class family that had no fashion-related background.

“Today I breathe fashion and it is all because of my passion for it. I see no reason why any of you cannot do what I did,” he said.
