Daughters of two elected representatives from the city are on a campaign spree for the forthcoming general elections in Vijayawada West constituency.

Shabhana Khatoon, daughter of Vijayawada West MLA Sk. Jaleel Khan, and Kesineni Swetha, daughter of Vijayawada MP K. Srinivas, are together hitting the campaign trail for the ruling party.

‘Learning curve’

While Ms. Shabhana is running in the elections in place of her father, Ms. Swetha is helping Mr. Srinivas as well as the constituency candidate. Both are interacting extensively with locals as well as roadside vendors and shopkeepers in order to know of their problems.

On Tuesday, the duo flipped dosas at a tiffin centre, chopped meat at a butcher’s shop and participated in other activities as part of their campaign in the 49th Division. Speaking to reporters, Ms. Khatoon and Ms. Swetha said that participating in the campaign has taught them to identify people’s problems and other issues surrounding politics and public administration.

“The campaign has received a huge response from locals so far. We have covered six municipal divisions and the patronage has been higher than expected,” MLA Sk. Jaleel Khan, who accompanied the duo, said. Meanwhile, YSRCP’s probable candidate Vellampalli Srinivas also began his campaign in the constituency, even as sources say that the party is hopeful of finalising a strong Muslim candidate.
