Dalit associations have stepped up their agitation demanding setting up of a fast track court here to ensure speedier trial of the murder case involving 45-year-old Bethala Kantha Suneela.
Andhra Pradesh Dalit Maha Sabha convener Katti Padma Rao led the day long protests in front of the victim’s house at Nazarpet on Wednesday.
Besides a comprehensive probe, Mr. Padma Rao demanded payment of Rs.50 lakh compensation to the next of kith and kin of the victim, distribution of five acres o agricultural land to the family, government jobs to the two daughters who are studying Engineering and Agriculture respectively, constitution of a judicial enquiry, cancellation of licence given to the Sri Lakshmi Ganapathi Bar and Restaurant.
Mr. Padma Rao also demanded that the eighth accused, Ummalaneni Nagaraju, should be made the first accused.
District Collector S. Suresh Kumar, who reached the venue of the protest by afternoon, conceded to some of the demands.
Mr. Suresh Kumar told The Hindu that steps would be taken to give 5 acres of land through the SC Corporation, provide complete support to the two daughters who are presently studying professional courses and promised that a government job would be provided after completion of their education.
Referring to the demand for payment of Rs.50 lakh compensation, the Collector said that compensation in tune with the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities Act) would be provided and recommendation would be sent to the State government for providing higher compensation. The Collector also issued notice ordering closure of the bar and added that he would recommend to the Commissioner of Excise to cancel the licence. The location of the Bar close to a temple would also be taken into consideration. He also said that he would recommend for setting up a special court at Tenali to ensure speedier trial of the case.
