Young talent can be identified and trained

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is scheduled to launch the ‘Project Gandiva’ and lay the foundation stone for ‘Amaravati International Sports Complex’ at Vidyadharapuram on Tuesday. Addressing the media after inspecting the arrangements Minister for Sports Kollu Ravindra on Monday said that Mr. Naidu will lay the foundation stone at 4 p.m. for the construction of the sports complex in an 8.9 acre area. The sports complex that includes a world-class stadium is estimated to cost ₹60 crore, he said.

About Project Gandiva, Mr. Ravindra said that with an aim to groom talented sportspersons who could compete at national and international level sports meets, the project under the new sports policy has been designed. For the same the government has initiated the establishment of the Centre of Excellence, state sports academies, sports schools, long-term athletic development programme, he said. “The main aim of the project is to achieve medals at international sports meets like Olympic Games. Besides, it is planned to see AP on top in the country in athletics by 2021, win a medal in Asian and Commonwealth Games in 2022, compete in Olympics in 2024 and win a medal at Olympics in 2024,” he said. The Sports department has identified 303 government and welfare schools where sports facilities like minimum 200 meter long tracks and others will be established, he said. At the same time, young talent in schools would be identified by the department and they will be trained by internationally reputed coaches at the Centre of Excellence in Acharya Nagarjuna University campus.
