City-fringes turn venues for cockfights

The agricultural fields in different mandals of Krishna district, which is giving way to real estate ventures, have become the grounds for hosting cockfights this Sankranti. The habitations on the city outskirts and villages reverberated with cheers and whistles as cockfights were being organised from dawn to dusk.

The organisers decked up the fields with ‘yellow’ banners and extended greetings of “Mana Sankranti Mana Sambaralu” to visitors arriving at the venues. Driving in swanky cars, visitors from different placed arrived at the venues and indulged in betting on the cockfights. The betting ranged from a minimum of Rs.5,000 to Rs. 2 lakhs and above, it is learnt.

Cockfights were held in Manikonda, Mudienapalli, Agiripalli, Nunna, Nuzvid, Mandavalli, Kalidindi and Kaikaluru and other mandals while a similar atmosphere prevailed in other parts of the district.

Areas like Kankipadu, Tenneti, Proddutur, Edupugallu were the new venues for cockfights this time. The festivities hit a new high as there was no dearth of food, money and liquor.

Organisers made elaborate arrangements including ample space for vehicle parking. So much so, the lots were offered on auction for the operators at a few places.

Parking fee for a two-wheeler cost Rs. 40 and four-wheeler owners were charged Rs.80.
