City to host national judo meet in August

May 07, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 08:25 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

Andhra Pradesh Judo Association (APJA) chairman Yarlagadda Harishchandra Prasad on Wednesday said Vijayawada will host the Sub-Junior National Judo Championship for boys and girls (under-15) in the last week of August.

Speaking to media persons, after inaugurating the AP and district Judo Association office at the IGMC Stadium here, he said the city would be hosting the national judo event for the third time.

“Earlier we staged senior Nationals in 2007 and Federation Cup in 2011. We want to host the event in a befitting manner as we are hosting this national event after bifurcation,” he added.

Mr. Prasad said that State government should develop sports and games in a big way as good health could be spread among citizens. “Once good health is spread the budget for health sector will be reduced. Good health means less money to spend on hospitals,” he said. He also suggested the judo administrators to teach the martial art to street children and riff-raffs, who went awry in their life. “These kids (the riff-raffs) will have the all-important aggression in them and we should help them channelise their frustration in a productive manner. We should take up this pursuit as a social responsibility,” he emphasised.

He gave the example of Brazil, which had sports schemes for slums dwellers. The coaching camp under the trained eyes of senior judoka D. Srinivasa Rao from Kakinada was inaugurated.
