City hospital conducts kidney transplant

May 08, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:11 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

Doctors at Manipal Hospitals, Vijayawada, performed kidney transplant on a beneficiary of the NTR Vaidya Seva Scheme. Nephrologist and transplant physician A.V.S.S.N. Sridhar said it was the first kidney transplant conducted in a corporate hospital in the State after Visakhapatnam.

Several kidney transplants had been performed in non-corporate hospitals, but Manipal Hospitals was the first corporate hospital in the region to conduct the operation, he said. The damaged kidney of Mastan Rao, 40, from Nuzvid was removed to be replaced by a kidney donated by his mother in the four-hour-long procedure.

The hospital conducts kidney transplant at affordable cost for eligible patients under the NTR Vaidya Seva Scheme, Dr. Sridhar said.
