Centre urged not to divert Vijayawada airport funds

Andhra Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) has written letters to Union Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh and Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy urging them to take necessary steps to develop and modernise the Gannavaram Airport.

Chamber president Muthavarapu Muralikrishna said that they were shocked to learn that the Central Government was examining a proposal to divert funds meant for Vijayawada airport to Aurangabad airport. If it were to happen, the proposal to expand Gannavaram airport would be shelved permanently.

“There is a considerable delay in executing the proposal. It will cause immense damage to the potentially prospective Vijayawada airport,” he said.

All the airports, in State and across the country, were being developed and modernised with sole exception of Vijayawada. As the State Government has been taking steps to acquire land for the airport expansion, the central government was requested not to divert the funds to other airports or activities. “We hope that the Civil Aviation policy of the government does not discriminate and disfavour Vijayawada.”
