Cameras to keep watch on dumper bins in city

Command centre issues live alerts to staff when they overflow

After setting up 'smart garbage bins' that would automatically send an SMS alert upon being full, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation is going to adopt another technology to keep track of the condition of dumper bins across the city.

The civic body places dumper bins at over 150 locations under the three circles. Garbage collected from households, commercial complexes and other sources is dumped several times a day in these bins and they are emptied at frequent intervals.

However, the delay in emptying the bins by the sanitation staff has turned a major concern for those people living in their proximity.

To avoid such situations, the civic body is going to put up wireless connected CCTV cameras at all the dumper bin spots and monitor garbage clearing works live from the command centre which is to come up in the municipal office premises.

“In the first phase, we are going to set up the surveillance cameras at 49 dumper bin locations in a circle. In the later phases, other dumper bins will be covered,” Municipal Commissioner J. Nivas told The Hindu .

“We have already arranged a wireless camera at the dumper bin on Pinnamaneni Polyclinic Road and similar devices will be put up in other locations. The live visuals of the bins will be on display at the command centre and staff concerned will be alerted when the bin gets full,” he said. The Municipal Commissioner and other higher officials concerned will also have access to the visuals and supervision will be done.

The civic body is also planning to set up the smart garbage bins, which are also underground bins, to replace regular dumper bins at about 10 commercial areas.

“Necessary changes to the design of the existing bins will be made before setting up the new ones,” Mr. Nivas said.
