Bio-toilets to be set up in city soon

January 17, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:18 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

Overflowing drainage, damaged pipelines and foul smell enveloping localities. These are some of the regular complaints from residents in 25th , 26th and other neighbouring divisions, in which most residents reside on the hill slopes.

It is a perennial problem for residents in few divisions though geographically they happen to be in core areas of the city. Giving into the rising complaints over poor maintenance and insufficient toilets from residents, especially women in Bhavanipuram, Kummaripalem centre, Gollapalemgattu, Jodubommala centre and other areas, Vijayawada MP Kesineni Srinivas (Nani) said efforts are being made to establish bio-toilets in such divisions.

Speaking on the sidelines on visiting e-vaidya centre near NSM School at Patamata here on Wednesday, he said establishing bio-toilets would address many problems in the city. Most residents on the hill slope areas do not have the provision of individual toilets and they are dependent on community toilet centres, in which more than 20 toilets are provided at one place. But there are complaints about poor maintenance and overflowing drainage.

To fix these problems, establishing bio-toilets, would help the residents and it would also curb the overflowing drainage problems. Developed by DRDO using bio-digester technology, these toilets can be expensive but they address many problems. More importantly, they help in maintaining proper hygiene and sanitation, he said.

Since last five months, talks are on with different bio-toilets manufacturers and things are in the final stage. Plans are afoot to establish a few such toilets in 25th and 26th divisions by March. Modalities like utilising MPLADS funds, municipal corporation funds or seeking help of corporate entities under CSR activities are being worked out for executing the project, he informed.

“Depending on the feedback and success of the project, similar toilets would be established at public toilets in Besant road, Kaleswararao Market and other busy areas in the city,” said Mr. Nani.
