Being a vet is a social responsibility, says official

May 01, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:49 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

Veterinary doctors should not work merely for salary, they have a social responsibility, said Animal Husbandry Joint Director T. Damodhar Naidu.

Speaking to veterinary surgeons at the World Veterinary Day celebrations at his office in Muthyalampadu here on Saturday, Dr. Naidu said that the theme selected by the World Veterinary Association and World Organisation for Animal Health for the day was ‘The One Health’ concept for humans and animals together.

He said, while medical science had become commercialised to some extent, veterinary science was still service oriented. He urged the veterinarians to strive for the prosperity and health of society.

“The vibrancy of rural economy which was often linked to livestock health was the responsibility of the veterinarians,” he said.

The milk production target set for Krishna district was 9.68 lakh tonnes, but given the potential, 11 lakh tonnes could be achieved.

“The target for next year was 13.37 lakh tonne, but this would require tremendous effort from the veterinarians. The average production of an animal had to be 9 litres or more to achieve this target,” he added.

The veterinarians should gear up for the exponential increase in milk consumption in the capital area.

The population that was currently 25 lakh would increase to 60 lakh, or even go up to 80 lakh in the next 10 years. The consumption of meat and eggs would also increase tremendously.

Krishna district Veterinary Officers’ Association president M.S.A. Dinakar, secretary K Srinivasulu, Krishna district Veterinary Surgeons’ Association president D. Rajasekhar, secretary Srinivas, Andhra Pradesh Veterinary Assistant Surgeons’ Association secretary T. Saigopal spoke.
