Awareness programme to mark 'World Breastfeeding Week'

An awareness programme to mark the commencement of 'World Breastfeeding Week', observed across the world from August 1 – 7, was held at the Government Hospital at Nandyal in Kurnool district, here on Wednesday.

Hospital Superintendent Vijayabhaskar, interacting with the event participants, outlined the importance of breastfeeding and on how mother's milk was beneficial to the baby.

He further remarked that mother's milk would address several health issues faced by the baby, right from development of body's immune systems to offering the essential nutrients. Urging mothers of newborns to drink sufficient quantity of water and take adequate nutritious food, Mr. Vijayabhaskar advised the former to follow the advice of the doctors. He also called upon them to spread awareness and educate expecting mothers on the benefits of breastfeeding. Later, Dr. Sirisha explained on the link between breastfeeding and decrease in risk of cancer in women. She, accompanied by several hospital doctors, spoke in detail about the benefits of breastfeeding.
