Artisans rue missing opportunity

October 20, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:50 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

The most important guests attending the Amaravati ceremony will receive 3D replicas of the Amaravati stupa. Owing to time constraints, the State Government’s plans of having them handcrafted had to be abandoned.

The State Government plans to present a replica of the Amaravati stupa as a memento to the most important guests including Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the foundation stone laying ceremony of capital of Amaravathi. The Andhra Pradesh Handicrafts Development Corporation (known as Lepakshi) was been given the task of getting them ready by October 22. Lepaskhi initially approached silver filigree artisans in Karimnagar district in Telangana to create handcrafted replicas.

However, the artisans expressed their inability to take the order as the process would require at least two weeks given the intricate work involved.

“The Karimnagar artisans said they could not meet the deadline of October 22. That left the government to go in for 3D printing technology. The replicas are being done in crystal in Mumbai,” sources said.
