APIIC scouts for land for industries

Palnadu area in Guntur district more conducive for setting up units

June 27, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:47 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

The Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) is struggling to find suitable land for industries in Krishna district as most of the land identified by the Revenue Department is either hilly terrain or useful for agriculture.

It is the case with uplands areas like Agiripalli, Mylavaram and Nuzvid where the availability is more than the delta area.

Guntur district fares better in this regard as there are vast tracts, particularly in Palnadu area, which are relatively conducive for establishment of industries, according to official sources.

The Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation, at present, currently on the job of forming lands banks comprising 13,000 acres and 41,000 acres in Krishna and Guntur districts respectively.

Inspections have almost been completed and Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation could so far find only about 1,500 acres and 5,500 acres suitable for industries.

Alternative location

As a consequence, alternative locations are being explored but the result is not encouraging, said APIIC Zonal Manager B. Maheswara Rao. He told The Hindu that due priority was given to improving infrastructure, without which prospective entrepreneurs would not give a tangible shape to their plans. But, availability of suitable land was an issue, which the district administration is trying to sort out.

Connectivity issues

Superior connectivity of upland areas in Krishna district is expected to attract a sizeable number of small industries. Besides, there are a slew of incentives announced in the New Industrial Policy (NIP).

As far as industrial plots in existing estates are concerned, there are 37 vacancies at Jaggaiahpet and 42 at Nuzvid. Most of the plots at other places are booked.

In spite of various fiscal and other incentives offered by State government, some entrepreneurs might still prefer setting up their units in Hyderabad due to its logistical advantages, which have traditionally tipped the scales in its favour in the undivided State, and an equally good industrial facilitation measures announced by the Telangana government, an Industries Department official opined.

He expressed optimism that the Andhra Pradesh government would deliver its commitments under the NIP.
