Thirty two-year-old M. Phani Sri, wife of Kiran, doused herself with kerosene and set herself ablaze allegedly unable to bear the torture by her husband and in-laws demanding additional dowry.
She was a native of Penamaluru village on the city outskirts.
According to Penamaluru Circle Inspector K. Damodar, the victim reportedly set herself on fire on Saturday and suffered 100 per cent burns. She died while undergoing treatment in a hospital.
Police took Kiran and his father, M. Nageswara Rao, into custody. Cases have been registered against the accused under Sections 498 (a-dowry harassment) and 306 (abetment to suicide) of IPC and investigation is under progress, said Mr. Damodar.
