A three-member task force of the Directorate of Medical Education inspected the facilities and other functional aspects at the Government General Hospital (GGH) here on Wednesday.
Panel members P. Shyam Prasad (Professor of Surgery at Andhra Medical College, Visakhapatnam), J. Ravi Kumar (Professor of Social and Preventive Medicine, Siddhartha Medical College, Vijayawada) and A. Veerraju (Professor of Medicine, Rangaraya Medical College, Kakinada) went around different wards and departments. GGH Superintendent D. Phanibhushan showed them the infrastructure facilities and explained issues related to the hospital development.
Steps suggested
The task force members suggested that steps be taken to fill about 100 vacant posts of nurses, para-medical staff and technicians so as to render better services to patients. If necessary, those posts needed to be created. The task force would apprise the matter to higher authorities.
The doctors advised the GGH superintendent to have an exclusive ophthalmology ward in view of the rising number of people seeking treatment for eye ailments.
Lastly, they expressed displeasure over the poor quality of works being done in the multi-speciality block by Andhra Pradesh Health and Medical Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation.
Dr. Phanibhushan told The Hindu that the task-force members were by and large satisfied with the performance.
They were aware of the infrastructure constraints which the GGH was trying to bridge. Staff inadequacy found particular mention in their observations.
