The agitation launched by Telugu Desam activists in Guntur district on Tuesday protesting against shifting of party president N. Chandrababu Naidu and other MLAs from Dharmabad to Aurangabad Central Jail turned violent at several places.
In Guntur town, party activists targeted post office and the renovated office premises of BSNL's customer care centre located on the Main Road in Brodipet.
Minutes after party district unit president P. Pulla Rao left the makeshift tent erected at Arundelpet, Telugu Yuvatha activists led by Kommineni Sambasiva Rao smashed glass window panes and LCD television sets in the BSNL office. When the police took a dozen activists into custody, party workers staged a dharna opposite the Arundelpet police station.
Party activists held up traffic on the busy NH-5 near the Ponnur bye-pass road.
Some of them smashed the windscreens of lorries bearing Maharashtra registration number name plates.
Commuters travelling by buses faced a lot of hardship as traffic was held up for over an hour and some of the stranded passengers walked all the way to Guntur.
Later in the evening, party activists broke windshields of buses on National Highway 5 at Chilakaluripet and held up movement of buses and lorries on the National Highway.
Police rounded up about 20 party workers.
Telugu Yuvatha activists were seen moving on motorcycles blowing horns.
Superintendent of Police D.S Chahuan reviewed the law and order situation and instructed the DSPs to take stringent action against law-breakers.
