A drinking water pipeline that supplies to Two Town area in the city broke keeping the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation officials on tenterhooks. It broke due to the movement of heavy vehicles on the Canal Road near Vinayaka temple, on Tuesday.
It broke two days ago very close to the present spot. The VMC officials blamed it on the city police for allowing the heavy vehicles on the Canal Road during night. There was a ban on movement of multi axle vehicles such as lorries. The police, however, turned a blind eye to the heavy vehicle movement. It was damaging the pipelines, the VMC officials said.
The Corporation officials said it was very difficult to carryout the repair works on Canal Road and near Head Water Works as the traffic density was high. The permission from the city police was mandatory to carry out the repairs. If the damage was major, the water supply has to be stopped; they said and added that the heavy vehicle movement needs to be curtailed.
The road near Gopuram at the foot of Indrakeeladri had turned into a pool of water in 2010 following a leak in the main pipeline that carries water to Two Town area in the city.
The pipeline from Head Water Works to Prizerpet reservoir was damaged in September 2009 apparently due to movement of heavy vehicles.
Water supply was badly hit when a boulder rolled down Indrakeeladri damaging the pipeline a couple of years ago. A hairline crack in the pipeline that takes water from K.L. Rao Head Water Works to One Town affected supplies to many areas in July 2009.
