Invaluable contributions of Sir Visveswaraya recalled

Budding engineers remembered and recalled the great services of eminent engineer-statesman Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya at the commemorative meetings organised in various engineering colleges across the city on the occasion of “Engineers’ Day” on Tuesday.

The speakers exhorted the students to emulate, and get motivation from the great deeds of, Sir Visvesvaraya, as the celebrations were held at V.R. Siddhartha Engineering College (VRSEC), P.V.P. Siddhartha Institute of Technology (PVPSIT), Potti Sriramulu Chaluvadi Mallikharjuna Rao College of Engineering (PSCMRCE) and other colleges.

Ch. Veeraiah, a former irrigation adviser to the State government, was felicitated at a function held on the premises of VRSEC. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Veeraiah recalled and listed out the myriad contributions made by Sir Mokshagundam Vivesvaraya to the cause of public good.

The forefathers of the great engineer originally hailed from a village called Mokshagundam in Prakasam district and they migrated to Karnataka some 200 years ago, he said.

Illustrious engineer

At the Potti Sriramulu Chaluvadi Mallikharjuna Rao College of Engineering in One Town, secretary T. Srinivasu, joint secretary Pawan Kumar and principal K. Sudhakar Reddy were among those who spoke about the difference that the illustrious engineer had made to the field of irrigation. Speaking as a chief guest on the occasion, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of Non-conventional Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (NEDCAP) M. Papi Reddy said the bridge across the Ganga, the project on the Tungabhadra river and planned development of Mysore would be remembered for ever as Sir Visvesvaraya’s greatest contributions.

Mr. Papi Reddy also spoke on the theme of “Engineering solutions to combat climate change” at the celebrations organised by the Vijayawada local centre of the Institution of Engineers (India) at K.L. Rao Bhavan. Three eminent engineers – V. Kameswara Rao, a retired telecom general manager; A. Punna Rao, a retired deputy chief inspector of boilers; and K. Gopichand, a retired professor in electrical & electronics engineering, Guntur – were honoured on the occasion. Institution of Engineers India local centre chairman M.R.S. Prakasa Rao presided over the meeting.

K. Srinivasu and R. Madhava Rao, principal and administrative officer, respectively, of P.V.P. Siddhartha Institute of Technology participated in the celebrations organised by their college students. P.V.S. Lakshmi, head of the department of IT and faculty B.V. Manikyala Rao were also present.

Mr. Srinivasu pointed out that Sir Vivesvaraya ’s contributions brought about a huge transformation in the irrigation sector and that the late engineer provided matchless services in whichever place he worked. Sir Visvesvaraya’s name was associated with the development of bridges, irrigation projects and infrastructure projects in Mysore, Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam and various towns and cities across the country, he added
