All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) city committee staged a sit-in protest in front of the rythu bazaar at Swaraj Maidan on Bandar Road protesting against the poor maintenance of the market places in the city.
On Thursday, the AIDWA activists submitted a memorandum to Joint Collector Gaurav Uppal urging him to take necessary action in weeding out the middlemen at rythu bazaars.
They also wanted a slew of measures to improve the functioning of the bazaars. The government should construct a yard for purchasing vegetables from farmers, they said.
They wanted the government to release vegetables to rythu bazaars and fix the prices, including a profit of 10 per cent and 5 per cent administrative charges. Any vendor who sells the vegetables above the fixed prices should be punished sternly, they said.
Middlemen menace
The AIDWA activists alleged that the middlemen were grading the vegetables at the bazaar. The top quality vegetables were being sent to super markets and inferior quality was being sold to customers at higher prices. The middlemen were selling vegetables as per their whims and fancies.
There was no proper check on the fixation of prices or sale at the bazaars, which were not sufficient to meet the requirements of the city, they said.
AIDWA city secretary K. Sridevi, president K. Saroja and others spoke.
