Commissioner for Disaster Management C. Parthasarathy on Friday wanted the officials to speed up the works sanctioned under the National Cyclone Risk Mitigation Project (NCRMP) in nine coastal districts so as to complete them by February next year.
Addressing a meeting of superintending engineers of Roads and Buildings (R&B) and Panchayat Raj (PR) Departments of Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam and West Godavari districts here on Friday, Mr. Parthasarathy said that a sum of Rs 1,000 crore was sanctioned for the NCRMP works recently and there was no scope for complacency as the rainy season was approaching.
There was no paucity of funds and it was up to the officials concerned to speed up things to be prepared for the monsoon, he said. “With a sum of Rs 642 crore being sanctioned by the World Bank in the first phase, construction works of 138 multi-purpose cyclone shelters, roads to 365 habitations, 23 bridges and flood banks were taken up and they needed to be speeded up,” he said. A sum of Rs 395 crore was sanctioned later for taking up more works and they were at different stages of execution, he added.
Mr. Parthasarathy also asked the officials to invite tenders for reinforcement of the Campbell Canal in Krishna district, finalise tenders for the construction of flood banks along the coastal habitations in Krutthivennu mandal and get a cyclone shelter constructed in the place of a dilapidated school building at Gilakaladindi. District Collector M. Raghunandana Rao, NCRMP Chief Engineer Vijay Kumar, Quality Control Project Manager D. Bhavana Rao and others also participated in the meeting.
