Even as the Tiruchirapalli City Corporation is gearing up to provide amenities for the public on the Aadi Perukku day at the bathing ghats on the Cauvery in the city, District Collector Jayashree Muralidharan inspected the arrangements on Friday.

A large number of people take a holy dip in the Cauvery river during the festival which falls on August 3 this year. Ms. Jayashree inspected the arrangements at the Amma Mandapam bathing ghat in Srirangam. With the Cauvery riverbed remaining dry, the corporation is making arrangements for supply of water through borewells for the public to have a bath on the occasion. Other amenities such as toilets and drinking water supply are also to be provided.

Accompanied by R. Chandran, City Engineer, and B. Rengarajan, Assistant Commissioner, Srirangam, Ms. Jayashree inspected the place and gave necessary instructions to the officials.

Appeal for water release

The Farmers Wing of the State Congress has appealed to the State government to order the release of 5,000 cusecs of water from the Mettur Reservoir into the Cauvery.

In a statement here, A. Nagarajan of the Congress Farmers Wing pointed out that it is customary for people and farmers of the delta region to celebrate Aadi Perukku.
