Wheelchairs ensure easy movement

Ramp and wheelchair facilities provided at polling booths came in handy for the physically challenged and elderly persons to exercise their franchise in Karur Lok Sabha constituency on Thursday.

To facilitate the hassle free movement of physically challenged persons to reach the polling booths, the Election Commission had instructed District Election Officials to make arrangements to provide wheel chair in all booths.

As many as 1,650 polling booths functioned in Karur Lok Sabha constituency in 608 locations. Almost all booths were provided with ramp and wheel chair. Arrangements were in place to assist the physically challenged and elderly persons to sit on wheel chair. They reached the booths with the help of assistants. Moreover, the disabled were given priority in casting votes too.

“I thought of using the wheelchair available at the GH to bring my ailing wife to cast vote. But, to my surprise, I was told that wheelchair was available at all booths. The government and ECI deserve praise for it,” said Abdul Jabbar of Pallapatti in Karur district.
