Silt and waste that were removed from a drainage canal and left on the roadside along Vayalur Road by civic workers has been hindering traffic and posing a risk to motorists.

The Tiruchi City Corporation launched its annual desilting drive on August 21, aiming to clean all drainage canals across the city before monsoon sets in. However, the silt lifted from Kathirikai Vaical has been dumped on the road inconveniencing residents and motorists.

The weed and silt was dumped just a stone's throw away from a private college three days ago and has not been moved since, complain residents.

“The Vayalur road is highly congested and witnesses frequent traffic jams. Now, with at least a third of the road blocked by the silt, it is difficult to navigate,” complained I. Manikavel, a resident of Puthur.

The dumped silt has also been the cause of at least two or three riders slipping, said another resident, R. Sundaram. “The silt has been dumped right next to the safety wall of the small bridge over the drainage canal. Motorists, especially two-wheelers could slip and fall into the canal as silt, combined with water has made the surface slippery,” he said.

The silt has been left to dry so it is easier to transport, say officials at the corporation.

“The silt has been left for a couple of days until it dries so trucks can transport it easily. Otherwise, it will leak along the road while being transported spreading unpleasant smell and dirt. Most of the silt has dried and will be cleared soon,” an official said.
