In a move to prevent misuse of space beneath the road over bridges, the Tiruchi Corporation has decided to form walking track along the unused public space.

In the first phase, it has begun laying concrete slabs for a walking track beneath the ROB at Palakkarai for about half a km. The walkers friendly slabs are being laid from Bheema Nagar to Palakkarai. In order to prevent misuse of the space, the entire stretch has been protected with iron grills. Similarly, the pillars of the ROB have been beautified with attractive paints. In addition, paintings have been drawn at various places to provide a feel-good mood for walkers. Children playing equipment would be provided wherever possible. There was a provision to establish artificial fountain too. Provision would be made for benches at various places. A sum of ₹35 lakh had been earmarked for the project.

Corporation Commissioner cum Special Officer N. Ravichandran said that the move was aimed at making use of unused spaces beneath Road Over Bridges, which were otherwise misused or occupied by many people. The laying of user friendly walking slabs would be completed within two weeks. The walking track would serve the residents living along the ROB for keeping them brisk. A system would be established to regulate the walking exercise both in the morning and in the evening.

He said that the initiative would be extended to other ROBs gradually. The shade under the ROB would enable the people to walk without being exposed to sun.
