Vigil stepped up along coast

The district police on Monday stepped up vigil along the coastal stretch with intensive focus on villages and places of worship, in the wake of a wave of terror bombings in Sri Lanka during Easter celebrations on Sunday.

Police patrolled all 51 coastal villages along the 185-km stretch in the district. Two personnel would carry out patrolling by foot in each coastal village. “Checkposts have also been erected at 19 vulnerable points, at locations where the roads join the coast,” Superintendent of Police C. Vijaya Kumar said.

A posse of 20 personnel would keep vigil at Velankanni shrine in each shift.

At Point Calimere, patrolling was intensified under the supervision of an Inspector-rank officer.

Likewise, teams led by Inspector-level officers were posted at Tranquebar Fort and Nagapattinam and Poompuhar Ports, the SP said.
