The PWD had allotted ₹15 lakh for removing the water hyacinth from the Uyyakondan Canal.

The removal of water hyacinth has added beauty to the Uyyakondan Canal, which is in full flow.

The quickly spreading plant had invaded the canal right from Kuzhumayi Amman temple to Palakarai and Thiruverumbur in the city limit on the stagnant water, soon after the water supply was stopped in January. The hyacinth was seen completely occupying the canal for about 12 km.

Stating that it was affecting the free of flow of water in the canal, farmers and residents of Tiruchi had demanded the Public Works Department and the Tiruchi City Corporation to remove the hyacinth. They also highlighted that the plant had been facilitating large scale breeding of mosquitoes along the canal, thereby giving tough time to people living along the canal.

Accepting their demand, the PWD had allotted ₹15 lakh for removing the water hyacinth. Though the authorities began the task of removing water hyacinth about a month ago, they intensified the work after a spot inspection was carried out by the Commissioner of Revenue Administration Satyagopal, who visited Tiruchi recently.

Now, the canal that runs along the middle of Tiruchi sports a new look with the removal of water hyacinth, thereby bringing cheers to the farmers and local residents.

It carries 800 cusecs of water for irrigation and filling up of tanks and lakes in Tiruchi and Thanjavur districts.

The full flow of water into the canal has added beauty to the canal and the surroundings.

A senior PWD official told The Hindu that over 90% of hyacinth has been removed from the Uyyakondan Canal. The stretch from Kuzhumayi Amman temple to Palakarai and Varaganery had been cleared.

The ongoing work at Thiruverumbur would be completed in a day or two.
