The Fire and Rescue Services Department has proposed to set up two new fire stations in the central region to expand its services to public in case of emergency situation.

The new fire stations would come up at Keeramangalam in Pudukottai district and Thirumarugal in Nagapattinam district. The department has already identified the site for the new stations in the two districts falling under the central region.

The stations would function temporarily from buildings belonging to the local body for which approval from the latter having come through.

The central region alone accounts for nine fire divisions in the State — Tiruchi, Perambalur, Pudukottai, Karur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Villupuram, and Cuddalore. There are in all 88 fire stations spread across the central region at present and its tally would increase to 90 once the two new stations start functioning.

The new stations are to be set up heeding public demand and for operational purposes for quicker delivery of services in case of any emergency, said a senior departmental official here.

The new stations would start functioning once the manpower strength, vehicles, and necessary paraphernalia were provided, the official said.

The central region has the highest number of fire divisions in the State among the five regions. The department had forwarded a proposal to set up a fire station near the Gandhi Market area in Tiruchi dotted with wholesale markets and a row of business and commercial establishments.

The region was witness to five “serious” fire accidents so far this year – two reported in Villupuram fire division and one each in Karur, Pudukottai, and Perambalur divisions.

Although there was loss of property, there were no casualties in the “serious” fire accidents reported so far this year. The number of “medium” fire calls in the region was 36 till now this year.
