Traders urge government to withdraw sales tax hike

The Tamil Nadu Traders Federation has urged the State government to withdraw the hike in sales tax on various goods announced on Monday. In a statement here, Ve.Govindarajalu, state general secretary of the federation, said the hike would adversely affect the people, especially those from the middle and low income groups.

The hike announced by the government ahead of the budget, when the trading community was expected various concessions, would lead to a spiralling effect and increase in prices. The increase in value added tax on commodities from four to five per cent would also affect the people.

The government should instead explore other means to generate the revenue required to implement welfare schemes, he said. Mr. Govindarajalu also appealed to the government to convene pre-budget consultative meetings to hear the views of traders' representatives.
