Important thorough fares and commercial areas in the city are set to be brought under the cover of surveillance cameras soon.

As many as 146 surveillance cameras are planned to be installed across Srirangam, K. Abishekapuram, and Golden Rock zones in the city by a private agency which has already obtained clearance from the city police for installing the devices.

Following the issue of a no-objection certificate to Spectrum Ads, a Coimbatore-based private agency for installing the cameras, the Tiruchirapalli City Corporation is expected to give the go-ahead for the move. The issue would be taken up for discussion at the Corporation Council’s meeting on Friday.

As per the proposal, 87 surveillance cameras are planned to be installed in Srirangam zone including a dozen on the West Boulevard Road-Vellamandi Road stretch. This apart, the area around the Chathram Bus Stand would be brought under the cover of the cameras. About 23 cameras are to be installed between St. Joseph College Road to the Karur-Bypass and around the Chathram Bus Stand. Another 16 cameras would be installed between Anna Statue in Chinthamani and NSB Road while another 16 would be installed along the Big Bazaar Street.

In K. Abishekapuram zone, the Thillai Nagar Main Road would be covered with 19 cameras, apart from VOC Road and Royal Road.

The outer periphery of Central Bus Stand, between Rockins Road, and Bharathidasan Salai, coming under the Golden Rock zone would be covered with nearly half-a-dozen cameras. This apart, 16 cameras would be installed inside the busy Central Bus Stand. The Promenade Road, another arterial road, would be covered with eight cameras.

The initiative, officials said, was aimed at ensuring surveillance in prominent public areas in the city and is expected to help check crime and track criminals.

The private agency would put up advertisement bill boards with awareness messages. The agency would have to adhere to conditions laid down by the corporation and pay the specified advertisement charges and rental. The permission would be valid for three years.
