Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangankalin Peramaippu has condemned the Central government for allowing 51 per cent foreign direct investment in the multi-brand retail. Heeding a call given by Confederation of All India Traders, the Peramaippu has announced that shops and business establishments across the State would remain closed on September 20 to protest the Centre’s decision. It sought full support and cooperation from the trade bodies in this regard.

A resolution to this effect was adopted at the office bearers meeting of the Peramaippu held in Tiruchi on Sunday presided over by its State secretary Ve.Govindarajulu.

It said that foreign direct investment in retail would destroy the livelihood of crores of traders, while alleging that the Centre had decided to sacrifice the interests of Indian trading community and support multinational firms in gobbling up Indian trade.

It thanked and appreciated Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for her announcement that foreign direct investment in retail would not be allowed in Tamil Nadu and for condemning the Centre’s decision. By another resolution, it demanded that the Centre withdraw the diesel price hike and the restrictions imposed on domestic cylinders. It wanted the Central government to come out with a white paper in this regard.
