Tiruchi medical college gets three more PG seats in psychiatry

The Medical Council of India has accorded permission to K. A. P. Viswanatham Government Medical College in the city to offer three more post graduate seats in psychiatry from the next academic year.

“From the upcoming academic year, we will have three more PG seats in the Department of Psychiatry, on par with some of the older medical colleges in the region,” said A. Arshiya Begum, Dean-in charge of the college, addressing students of KAP Viswanatham Government Medical College at an event to observe World Mental Health Day here.

“The Medical Council of India has granted approval for the additional seats after inspection,” said Dr. Begum. Currently, the college offers one seat in MD Psychiatry.

Speaking on the occasion, Niranjana Devi, Head of Department of Psychiatry, urged students to make conscious efforts to be socially aware and work towards removing the stigma attached to mental illness. “This year, the theme for World Mental Health Day is ‘Suicide Prevention’. I want to ask everyone to take 40 seconds to think positive thoughts, to help oneself,” Dr. Devi said.

R. Yeganathan, Medical Superintendent, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital, assistant and associate professors of the psychiatry department and other departments were present.
