The Tiruchi Corporation has floated a tender to segregate and process the solid waste deposited at Ariyamangalam dump yard since 2018.

P.M.N. Mujibur Rahuman, Commissioner, Tiruchi, told The Hindu that it was estimated that 3.4 lakh cubic meter of garbage had been dumped in the yard since 2018. It was important to clear the municipal solid waste along with the garbage being cleared under phase-I of the bio mining project. It would enable the Corporation to retrieve the entire site.

Hence, a tender had been called inviting interested parties to take up the project. The formula being followed in phase-I of bio mining project would be applied to phase-II too. The tender would be opened in the first week of May and work order would be given to the eligible contractor the same month. The firm would be given 18 months to complete the project from the date of issuance of the work order.

As far as phase-I of the bio mining project, Mr. Rahuman said the company, which was executing the project at a cost of ₹49 crore had one more month to complete it. Out of 7.60 cubic meter of solid waste, about seven lakh cubic meter had been cleared so far. About 50,000 - 60,000 cubic meter of garbage was yet to be cleared. Similarly, the top layer of earth surface was also needed to be cleared. The company had been asked to execute the project within the time frame.

He added that plastic waste, segregated from other waste, was needed to be transported to cement factories in Ariyalur. It would be used as fuel in high-power kilns. The progress would be reviewed on a weekly basis.
