The Thuraiyur municipality has taken steps for streamlining the supply of drinking water.

The rusting of old pipes buried decades ago and consequent choking of the supply lines because of huge deposit of rust all around inside has been hindering the supply, say the official sources.

A row of underground water tanks have been built in front of each and every household through which the residents draw water. Some of these tanks had a flight of five or six steps, indicating the depth of the tub.

A cross-section of residents on the Vadakku Street complained that the supply had been erratic with the distribution affected either in the morning, afternoon, or late evening. One of the residents pointed out that at least three persons were needed to draw water. While one of the members had to get into the pit, another had to lift the pot, while the third person took it inside their home.

Official sources said unauthorised tapping of water disrupted supply. To check this, the municipality had evolved a new supply system.

The supply stood at 89 litres per capita per day (LPCD). As many as 56 of the 78 power pumps and 71 of the 105 hand pumps were not functioning because of serious depletion in groundwater. Despite all these odds, the municipality had made efforts for improving the supply of drinking water daily.

Residents complain that the water drawn from hand pumps or power pumps were not potable. They wanted the municipality to take steps for construction of additional overhead tanks, taking into consideration the town’s population.
