'Throw out irregularities in distribution of wages'

September 05, 2011 11:15 am | Updated 11:15 am IST - TIRUCHI:

The National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW), the women's wing of the Communist Party of India, has urged the government to weed out ‘irregularities' in distribution of wages to labourers under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

The government should take necessary steps to ensure that the labourers get full wages under the scheme in which women in large numbers were being engaged, the organisation said in a resolution that was adopted at the 12th district-level conference of the NFIW that was held here on Sunday.

The NFIW urged the Central government to increase the number of days of employment guaranteed under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme from 100 to 200.

By another resolution, the organisation urged the State government to establish a primary health centre for every three villages. It also urged for reservation for women in government and private engineering colleges besides medical colleges.

It requested the Central government to take necessary efforts and prevail upon the Sri Lankan government to launch economic schemes that guaranteed livelihood for the Sri Lankan Tamil women who had become widows and had become physically challenged in the ‘genocide' of Tamils that took place in the island nation.

Grant of house site pattas to the landless people; implementation of 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament; establishment of a drinking water quality control centre in Tiruchi district to ensure protected drinking water supply to the people; removal of conditions in grant of marriage assistance for women, old age pension and assistance for widows and withdrawal of death sentence awarded to the three convicts – Perarivalan, Murugan and Santhan- in the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination case were among other resolutions adopted at the conference. NFIW state president Suseela inaugurated the conference and delivered a special address. Office bearers and members of the organisation took part in the meet. Earlier, NFIW members took out a rally from Kora Theru to the venue of the conference at Woraiyur.
