Tiruchi city corporation on Saturday handed out bicycles for seven students as prizes for putting up best rainwater harvesting and home composting systems at their houses.

The civic body had announced that school students whose households are equipped with proper rainwater harvesting structures would be awarded with bicycles worth ₹5,500. To participate in the competition, schoolchildren were asked to send photographs of RWH installations in their houses along with their contact details to the Corporation office every week. The pictures also could be sent through WhatsApp on 8300113000.

Corporation officials would visit the residences and evaluate the work. Students who submit the best entries will be given bicycles on Saturdays of every week. The Corporation will conduct the contest for a period of one year. The civic body will also award bicycles to students who are able to segregate waste and use it to maintain a terrace garden at home. These students too, can submit photographs and will be evaluated. A maximum of 10 students have the opportunity to win cycles every week.

Awarding cycles to seven students- five for rainwater harvesting and two for home composting, N. Ravichandran, Corporation Commissioner, said that the prizes were an effective way to spread the message. The winners of this weeks' bicycles were- G. S. Sarveshraj from Thiruvanaikoil, V. Niveditha from Karumandapam, R. Kanishka from Woraiyur, V. Chidambaresh from Srirangam, R. Aswin from Srirangam, R. Pavithra from Kottapattu and A. Sridhar from Palakkarai.
