Tension prevailed for some time near the District Collectorate on the Thanjavur-Tiruchi road on Friday morning as hundreds of youth tried to enter the campus while their representatives were holding a discussion with the officials.

The youth, studying in two different government colleges in Thanjavur, tried to take out a procession under the auspices of Student Federation of India towards the Collectorate demanding distribution of laptops to all students and early disbursement of scholarship. However, they were prevented by the police who have managed to convince the youth to depute their representatives to meet the officials at the Collectorate to air their grievances.

While the police managed to convene a meeting of the youth representatives and the officials at the Collectorate, the youth who were asked to stay back at the educational institution premises moved in groups towards the Collectorate.

On seeing the crowd swelling near the Collectorate entrance, the police locked the entrance gates and asked the youth to retreat to their educational institutions. The students dispersed later after their representatives emerged from the Collectorate building and informed them that their grievance had been brought to the attention of the officials.
