Sungadi and silk sarees swing visitors

Handlooms and handicrafts of various states, worth Rs.20 lakh were on display at the all India handlooms and all crafts exhibition organised by the Tamil Nadu State Handicrafts Development Corporation at its Poompuhar showroom in the city on Wednesday. Sungadi sarees and silk sarees of Rajasthan, Hyderabad, and Madurai were the special attraction at the fair.

Array of choice

Silk bedspreads, carpets, pillow covers, door curtains, cushion covers, decorated window curtains from Jaipur, brass lamps made at the Poompuhar manufacturing centres in Nachiarkoil, Madurai and Vagaikulam, Thanjavur art plates, Thanjavur paintings, pearl garlands, wooden handicrafts, eye catching paintings on silk cloth, decorative wall panels, and Moradabad handicrafts have been displayed at the expo.

The price ranges from between Rs.40 and Rs.4,000. It has been targeted to market Rs.8lakh worth handlooms and handicrafts through this exhibition, said S.Kannaiyan, branch manager of the showroom.

A similar exhibition held last year achieved a sale proceed of Rs.4lakh, he said.

Stalin, Assistant Commissioner of Police, inaugurated the exhibition, which will continue till November 30.
