The recent summer showers have caused a serious setback to the brick kiln units in the district. The production has come to a standstill in the wake of moderate to sharp showers experienced.

Kiln workers say the showers, which commenced on Tuesday last, have caused extensive damage to bricks which were semi dry.

Many of them have covered the bricks with tarpaulin. A. Ravichandran of Chikkathambur near Thuraiyur says summer was the period when they could make hay as the construction activity witnesses maximum activity. “It is an unusual phenomenon to see the showers for four consecutive days,” he said.

He employs five labourers including a couple of women. “These labourers have been deprived of their wages due to the showers,” he said.

On an average, a kiln produces 1,500 bricks a day and with the work having been suspended for the past one week, the productivity of the kiln has been hit by 10,000 bricks.

Although the showers had receded on Monday, it would take another couple of days for restoration of the kiln. “The raw material should dry up completely for re-starting the work,” Mr. Ravichandran said.
