TIRUCHI: The Tiruchi Railway Division has carried 1.43 crore passengers in the current fiscal up to July and earned ₹ 10.47 crore more than the corresponding period of the previous year, Divisional Railway Manager Ajay Kumar said on Thursday.

Speaking at the 73rd Independence Day celebrations organised by the Tiruchi Railway Division here, Mr. Ajay Kumar said there had been substantial reduction in train accidents due to continuous efforts by the railway men. Security of travelling passengers had improved due to escorting of trains by personnel of the Railway Protection Force and the Government Railway Police.

Stating that utmost importance was being given on the safety front, Mr. Ajay Kumar said 29 unmanned level crossings in the Division had been manned; 13 others were closed by providing a diversion and seven others eliminated by providing subways. Ten manned level crossings had been eliminated either by providing road over bridge or limited use subway.

Highlighting the achievements of the Division, Mr. Ajay Kumar said it had registered 58.24 % higher earnings in the freight front by loading 4.07 million tonnes of goods. All passenger coaches maintained by the Tiruchi Division had been fitted with bio-toilets, he pointed out.

He said new escalators had been commissioned at Thanjavur railway junction and platform surfaces provided with epoxy flooring at the Tiruchi railway junction. Tiruchi was the first railway division in the Southern Railway zone and the second in Indian Railway to roll out E-office.

Mr. Ajay Kumar appealed to all railway men to enhance their efforts in safety and security work so as to achieve better results. Earlier, he unfurled the national flag and inspected the parade by the Railway Protection Force personnel and read out the message of the Southern Railway General Manager.
