The AIADMK government is labour-welfare oriented as it takes good care of the needs of workers from the unorganised and organised sectors alike, said Labour Welfare and Employment Minister S.T. Chellapandian here on Friday.

Addressing a function to mark the distribution of welfare assistance to members of the construction and unorganised sector workers welfare board, Mr. Chellapandian claimed that Chief Minister Jayalalithaa was intent on ensuring that all benefit measures reached the intended workers in the unorganised sector expeditiously and also did the spadework for broad basing the group of people who get the welfare measures.

During the previous DMK rule, around 33.11 lakh persons enrolled themselves with various welfare boards for the unorganised sectors during five years all over the State, whereas in the past 16 months of the AIADMK rule 45.43 lakh people have been enrolled as members of the numerous welfare boards.

Similarly, during the previous DMK regime, around 12.54 lakh members of workers welfare boards were given away assistance worth Rs.319 crore while in the past 16 months alone 5.18 lakh members have been granted Rs.114 crore as assistance, Mr.Chellapandian observed.

The Minister gave away welfare assistance to the tune of Rs.25 lakh to 360 beneficiaries.

The Minister added that in Karur district alone, in the past 16 months, more than 30,000 persons have enrolled themselves as members of various welfare boards while close to 16,000 beneficiaries have been granted a sum of Rs.1.85 crore as welfare assistance in the same period.

Transport Minister V.Senthil Balaji reiterated the point that the State government valued services of workers in the unorganised sector and had launched a lot of welfare measures for their social security and uplift.

The benefits covered not just the members of the welfare boards but also their families and other dependants thereby providing the much-needed social security, he added.

Collector V.Shobana presided over the function in which Kulithalai MLA A. Pappa Sundaram, Krishnarayapuram MLA S. Kamaraj, secretary, Tamil Nadu Unorganised Sector Workers Welfare Boards, S. Kalaivani, Additional Labour Welfare Commissioner, Tiruchi, N.V. Thayumanavar, and others spoke.
