Stamps brought out by India Post depict important events, portray personalities, and remain evidences of history.
A philatelic exhibition on Jawaharlal Nehru organised by the Centre for Nehru Studies of Bharathidasan University in commemoration of 125th birth anniversary of Nehru at the university on Thursday highlighted the milestones in the history of the great leader.
The 51 stamps and photographs displayed at the exhibition made people turn nostalgic. Besides stamps on important events in the life of Nehru, stamps on Motilal Nehru, his father, Kamala Nehru, his mother, and Nehru seen with Mahatma Gandhi and John F. Kennedy were on display.
India Post paid homage to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, a great leader, statesman and first prime minister of India by issuing a commemorative postage stamp on June 12 1964. Interesting aspect of this stamp is that 20 million copies were printed, highest ever number of stamps printed for a commemorative issue in the country.
A first day cover was released on May 27, 1965, on the occasion of the first death anniversary of Jawharlal Nehru. A postage stamp was issued signifying the flame of his noble spirit (Jawahar Jyothi).
