A special postal cover with special cancellation to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Rao Bahadur K. S. Ganapati Aiyer, a noted lawyer of yesteryears, was released at a function held at Tiruvanaikaval in the city on Monday.

J. T. Venkateswarlu, Post Master General, Central Region (Tamil Nadu), released the postal cover and Justice B. Rajendran, former Judge of the Madras High Court, received it.

Justice Rajendran paid rich tributes to the services of Rao Bahadur Ganapati Aiyer, particularly in heading the Bar for more than three decades, which testified to his leadership. Referring to his erudition in law, he explained the efforts taken by Ganapati Aiyer in getting the late E.V. Ramasamy Naicker acquitted in a case. This apart, Rao Bahadur was a great patriot, he said.

Prema Nandakumar, noted writer, explained the role of lawyers of yesteryears such as Rao Bahadur Ganapati Aiyer, in the cause of freedom movement.

She said that Rao Bahadur Ganapati Aiyer had a large library at his home and was erudite not only in law but also in other subjects such as literature. She cited an anecdote in which the late Saranathan, a great English scholar, too referred to his (Rao Bahadur Ganapati Aiyer’s) knowledge of English literature.

Mr. Venkateswarlu spoke on the achievements of Rao Bahadur Ganapati Aiyer. The scheme of special cancellation aimed at recalling the services of the leaders and achievers in different walks of life as a mark of respect and honour to them, he said.
