Sumathi Ravichandran, Postmaster General, Central Region, Tiruchi, and A. Thomas Lourduraj, Director of Postal Services Central Region, Tiruchi, released a special commemorative cover to mark 140 years of Indian Postal Service on Wednesday during the World Post Day celebration.

P. Manisankar, Vice-Chancellor, Bharathidasan University, recalled how the postal service was a big source of support for his education. The General Postal Union, later named Universal Postal Union, was established on October 9, 1874, in Germany. The postal services introduced in India by the British in 1879 completes 140 years this year, he said.

R. Sundararaman, Principal, National College, recollected that the Indian Postal Services used to be an important part of everyone’s lives before the advent of technology. ‘The minute we saw a postman at our door, we used to get anxious. The envelope could be an appointment order, a letter, an announcement of death or money order,’

Earlier, students of Seva Sangam Girls Higher Secondary School took out a rally from the school to the Head Post Office. They carried placards displaying various postal services. The Head Post Office will be observing Postal Week until October 15.

P. Vijayakumar, avid philatelist and deltiologist exhibited postcards from the last 140 years of postal services in India.
