A group of residents of Kambarasampettai in the outskirts of the city have petitioned the district administration to prevent sinking of new borewells on the Cauvery river near their village as they were already facing acute water scarcity due to depletion of groundwater table.
A large number of the villagers, including several women, thronged the Collector’s Office on Monday to present the a petition at the weekly grievances meeting. The villagers complained that there has been drastic fall in the groundwater table in the village as huge quantities of water was being pumped from the river bed every day for various water schemes, including those that supply water to the city.
“Although there are several borewells pumping water for various schemes from the river bed around the village, we have not been given house connections,” said P. N. Jayaraman, one of the villagers, said in the representation.
There is no water available in the check dam built near the village due to drought conditions. Borewells in several houses in Kambarasampettai have gone dry and even borewells sunk up to a depth of 80 feet have no water, the villagers complained.
The residents were apparently referring to the sinking of a new borewell near the village for a new scheme meant for the five new wards of the city.
The district administration should stop sinking of any new borewell on the river bed and protect the interests of residents in and around Kambarasampettai, they said.
