A group of 55 singers will be regaling lovers of Western music with classic and contemporary secular English and Tamil songs on Saturday to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their formation.
The ‘Singspirations’, an ecumenical choir started in 2004 by Philip Bhaskar to perform at a private wedding ceremony in the city, will be presenting solo numbers in German and Italian, in the ticketed event, to be held at Sangam Hotel at 6.30 p.m.
The chief guest of the evening is Augustine Paul, noted music director of the historic Madras Musical Association Choir. Jonath Backia Seelan has been in charge of Singspirations since 2009 and would be directing Saturday’s programme, which includes numbers such as Sing Unto God – Judas Maccabeus (G.F. Handel), The Longest Time (Billy Joel), I Will Follow Him (from the Hollywood movie Sister Act I ) and Thank You for the Music (ABBA). In its quest to enrol a hundred voices, Singspirations now has members from other faiths, and performs from its repertoire of Western classical, and also Tamil Christian lyrics.
It was guided by Faith Ragland, the Director of Coimbatore Chamber Choral, in its initial years.
