Siblings drown in river near Kudavasal

Two children of Kuchchipalayam near Kudavasal are reported to have drowned in the Thirumalairajan flowing through the hamlet on Tuesday.

Police said there was heavy flow in the river following the release of water for irrigation. Divya, 11, and her brother Sriram, 8, left their home around noon to have a bath in the river.

While bathing, the children were caught in the current and dragged down. On seeing their plight, others who were nearby rushed to their rescue and brought them to the bank. As they remained motionless, they were rushed to Government Medical College Hospital, Tiruvarur, where they were declared dead on arrival.

Upon hearing about her children’s death, their mother, Kavitha, tried to end her life but was saved by neighbours. The children’s father, Selvam, was an overseas employee, the police said.

Kudavasal police registered a case.

Assistance for overcoming suicidal thoughts is available on the State’s health helpline 104 and Sneha’s suicide prevention helpline 044-24640050.
